The Best Time to Visit St. Thomas for Snorkeling, Sailing and Sun

If your idea of paradise includes sailing over sapphire waters, snorkeling alongside sea turtles and ending each day with a sunset, St. Thomas might just be your dream come true—if you visit at the right time.
After a weeklong escape to St. Thomas this past February, I returned home sun-soaked, deeply relaxed and more convinced than ever that timing is everything when planning the perfect Caribbean getaway. The island gave me exactly what I was craving: calm and clear water, soft white sand and enough outdoor adventure to balance out the beachside lounging. To better understand the best time to visit St. Thomas, and why timing matters so much, I spoke with Dijon Carrillo, assistant general manager of Margaritaville Vacation Club–St. Thomas, who offered invaluable insights on how to make the most of your trip—and why St. Thomas is such a hot spot for American tourists.
“For travelers from the United States, St. Thomas is one of the few Caribbean islands that can be explored without a passport, making it an easily accessible, ‘no passport’ destination,” Carrillo says. “This connection has led to a unique American and Caribbean culture, one of the many remarkable fusions you can find on the island.”
So whether you’re planning to dive into underwater explorations, sail across the Caribbean or simply soak in the sun on an affordable family vacation, choosing the right time can turn a good vacation into an unforgettable one. Read on to find out the best time to visit St. Thomas before you book.

When is the best time to visit St. Thomas?
St. Thomas welcomes travelers year-round, but according to Carrillo, if you’re chasing clear skies, warm breezes and the kind of weather that makes every day feel like summer, December through May is your sweet spot.
During my own trip at the end of February, I found the conditions to be just about perfect—sunny skies, a gentle breeze rolling off the water and that dreamy island warmth that never felt too hot or heavy. It was the kind of weather that invites you outside and keeps you there. “This is the time of year when everything aligns—the humidity drops, the winds are light and the island really comes alive,” says Carrillo. “It’s ideal for snorkeling, sailing or just relaxing on the beach with a drink in hand.”
Carrillo recommends that travelers set set their clocks to island time and embrace the easy, unhurried rhythm of life in St. Thomas. “When you slow down and let the island set the pace,” he says, “you open yourself up to experiences you might’ve missed—whether it’s trying our world-famous fried conch or stumbling upon a hidden cove you’ll remember forever.”
When is the best time to visit St. Thomas for snorkeling?
“From December through April, we get peak visibility and some of the calmest waters,” says Carrillo. “It’s the perfect season for snorkeling, kayaking and exploring the water. You get sunshine and light breezes, and the ocean looks like glass.”
During my own visit in late February, I joined a morning kayak and snorkel tour with Virgin Islands (VI) Ecotours—a guided adventure through the serene mangrove lagoons. As we paddled across still, glimmering water and greenery, it felt like slipping into a quieter, wilder side of St. Thomas. After reaching Cas Cay, I pulled on my snorkel gear and dipped into the warm water to admire the scenery. I saw plenty of fish and a few sea turtles too!
Carrillo encourages visitors to explore beyond the usual beaches: “Snorkeling around places like Cas Cay or Secret Harbour gives you a deeper connection to the island. You’re not just watching nature—you’re in it.”
Plus, he adds, the island is home to more than 500 species of brilliantly colored fish, and thanks to consistently warm water temperatures and excellent visibility, conditions are ideal nearly every day of the year.
When is the best time to visit St. Thomas for sailing?
The most popular season for boating and sailing is during the high season from December to April. “Conditions include sunny, clear skies, steady winds and low humidity,” says Carrillo. “For the calmest waters and clearest visibility, the early mornings and late afternoons are great times to hit the water and explore the nearby islands.”
During my stay, I set out for a morning sail with Seas the Day Boat Charters on a private 50-foot catamaran, and it was nothing short of magical. At each snorkeling stop, we dove into a kaleidoscope of marine life, and when we surfaced, a packed lunch and open bar were waiting for us on deck. With reggae playing, it was the kind of afternoon that makes time feel like it stops.
As for those golden-hour moments? “A sunset sail is something everyone should experience,” Carrillo says. “We offer daily cruises right from the property—just step aboard and enjoy the show.”
When is the rainy season in St. Thomas?
“The rainy season in St. Thomas typically occurs from September to November, with the heaviest rainfall often in September and October,” Carrillo says. Despite the island experiencing some rain throughout the year, Carrillo notes that those fall months tend to have the most precipitation.
When is high season in St. Thomas?
December through April is the high season in St. Thomas. These months have the perfect conditions for a winter escape for travelers from the Northern Hemisphere. “These conditions are also great for enjoying the outdoors, with activities like snorkeling, hiking and kayaking,” Carrillo adds.
When is low season in St. Thomas?
“May to November is our quieter season,” Carrillo says. Despite this, water activities and culture-rich experiences are still in abundance year-round. “You’re likely to see more unique wildlife migrations, including shorebirds and seabirds, during this time frame,” Carrillo explains. “Our resident species, like green iguanas and crested anoles, are also more likely to make appearances.” Plus, you may even get lucky and see baby sea turtles hatching.
When is the best time to visit St. Thomas for fewer crowds?
What are must-visit attractions in St. Thomas?
“St. Thomas is one of those destinations that has something for everyone,” Carrillo says. “From lounging in beach chairs and sipping a chilled drink on Coki Point Beach—which happens to be just around the corner from the property—to learning about the local ecosystem on a guided kayak tour, the options are infinite.” Carrillo recommends savoring a rum punch or Painkiller as you enjoy the gentle breeze of the ocean, catching the sunset sail that departs right from their beach and visiting the iconic 99 Steps, a long brick staircase leading up a hill to a 17th-century watchtower known as Blackbeard’s Castle.
Here are a few fun eateries and activities based on my own trip:
- Have lunch at Gladys’ Café: A must-stop for hearty Caribbean cuisine in a cozy, colorful spot. The jerk chicken? Unforgettable. Gladys’ is known not just for its food but also for its famous homemade hot sauces—bottled on site and packed with island heat.
- Check out the Rum Room Mixology Class at Cardow Jewelers: Yes, it’s a jewelry store. Yes, there’s a hidden speakeasy inside. This surprise gem offers intimate rum mixology classes that are both educational and boozy.
- Have dinner at Blue 11: This high-end, small chef’s table experience by Chef Benji is perfect for foodies. Each dish highlights locally sourced ingredients with inventive Caribbean twists. I was blown away by the creativity and intimacy of the meal—it’s a true hidden gem.
- Enjoy a leisurely lunch at Sunset Grille: Steps from the sand, this spot is ideal for a long, lazy lunch with unbeatable views. The mahi tacos and icy rum punch are practically a rite of passage. The calm bay is perfect for a post-lunch swim or snorkel too.
- Visit Secret Harbour Beach: One of my personal favorite beaches on the island. It’s a quiet escape, and it’s less crowded than other beaches.
- Take a sunset cruise: These daily sails by Margaritaville Vacation Club–St. Thomas offer the best vantage point for St. Thomas sunsets. It’s a vibe you won’t want to miss.
- Have dinner at the Caribbean Fish Market: This beachfront seafood dinner spot, located at Club Wyndham Elysian Beach Resort, has a relaxed yet upscale feel. It was one of my favorite ways to end the day.

St. Thomas isn’t just about beautiful beaches and rum cocktails—it also comes alive throughout the year with vibrant festivals and cultural celebrations. One of the most anticipated highlights? St. Thomas Carnival in April. As Carrillo puts it, “This weeklong celebration highlights the rich heritage of the U.S. Virgin Islands with live music, street dancers, colorful parades and beyond. It’s a must-do experience for visitors.”
Whether you’re into live music, sailing or food festivals, here are some of the most exciting annual events to plan your trip around:

- VI Carnival Boat Races (April–May): These boat races take place at Charlotte Amalie Harbor.
